Aventurine Bloodstone
Also known as Heliotrope, Bloodstone is dark-green variety of chalcedony. The stone has nodules of bright-red jasper distributed throughout its mass that resemble drops of blood. Bloodstone can be found in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Kathiawar Peninsula and the USA.

A Little History:
In Medieval times it was thought that bloodstone had formed when drops of Christ’s blood fell to the ground it had stained a deposit of jasper at the foot of the cross. The stone was often carved into the shape of the cross for this reason. Bloodstone was also thought in the Middle Ages to have mystical properties such as stopping open wounds from bleeding and opening any locked door. The Greeks, calling it heliotrope, thought that the stone would bring positive change. You can find a remarkable example of a carved bloodstone seal once belonging to Emperor Rudolf II in The Louvre.
